***************
Night had fallen in Gondolin and high above the steep valley slopes,
the stars glittered in the darkened sky, unblemished by clouds.
His daily work finally complete, Ecthelion quickly made his way from
his own home to the House of the Golden Flower. The staff did not
question him as he entered -- he was a frequent visitor here and was
treated as if he were their own Lord.
On some occasions, he asked where Glorfindel might be found, but not
tonight. On a night like this, he knew there was only one place his
lover would be.
Bypassing Glorfindel's private rooms, Ecthelion made his way to the
very top of the tall house. High above the smaller guest rooms and
servants quarters was a single circular room, surrounded by a wide
balcony.
It was here that he found Glorfindel, stretched out on a wide blanket,
staring up at the stars.
"Comfortable?" Ecthelion asked, smiling down at the prone form of his
lover.
"Very," Glorfindel replied. He patted the space beside him. "Join me……
there's room enough for two!"
Ecthelion chuckled, for the blanket was very large indeed. "So I see!"
Moving over, he lay down beside Glorfindel, taking his hand in his
own. "I knew I would find you here -- the night was made for star-gazing."
"It was……" Glorfindel smiled in contentment. "I love to watch them.
They never cease to fascinate me."
"They are beautiful," Ecthelion agreed. "Yet what is it that draws you
to them in such a way?"
Glorfindel smiled wistfully. "They are a mystery…… jewels in a world we
cannot reach. I cannot help but wonder what it would be like to walk
amongst them." He turned to his lover, his eyes glittering as brightly
as the stars above. "Can you imagine what that would be like,
Ecthelion? To go where no one has gone before……" He trailed off,
blushing. "Do you think such a thing is possible? Or am I simply a
sentimental fool?"
Leaning over, Ecthelion kissed Glorfindel tenderly. "It sounds
impossible, but no one can tell. The years are long and the world is
ever changing. Who knows…… perhaps one day, someone somewhere will make
it so."
